Details

Osmanthus Flower is used by the Chinese to impart a pleasant aroma to tea, wine and sweet dishes such as lotus seed soup, pastries and steamed pears. It is also added to herbal medicines in order to disguise obnoxious flavors.

In China, osmanthus tea is produced by combining dried Sweet Osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans) flowers with black or green tea leaves in much the same manner the more familiar jasmine tea combines jasmine flowers with tea leaves. The infusion yields cups of sweet and refreshing liquor, with strong aromatic flowery fragrance. You can drink it plain or blended with Green and Oolong teas, lending its sweetness and pleasant floral aroma for the perfect enjoyment. Osmanthus Tea is a Chinese specialty, popular with its gentle aroma and delicious taste. At the same time, sweet-scented osmanthus tea is also a rare herbal medicine well known for its balminess. Osmanthus tea is produced in a similar fashion to jasmine tea. A layer of osmanthus blooms are placed between the fresh tealeaves and the delicate scent of osmanthus is allowed to permeate the tea. Following this, most of the osmanthus blooms are blended into the tea to enhance the visual appeal as well as boost the flavor. Osmanthus blooms are very delicate and the aroma from the blossoms is equally delicate resulting in mild peach flavor notes on the tea.

Flowers play an important part in Chinese life and osmanthus is no exception. Osmanthus flowers are said to improve digestion and make the ‘tea drinker’ live a longer and healthier life. Combine this with the health benefits of green tea and you achieve a tea that is particularly popular in Chinese life.

THE BOOK OF TEA, MING DYNASTY, 1592AD: "The flowers of osmanthus, jasmine, rose, rose multiflora, orchid, lotus, tangerine, gardenia and winter sweet can all be used in tea. Pick the blossoms when they are just opening, so that the stamens retain all their aroma. Mix them with tea leaves, one part flowers to three of tea."

Chinese Tea Description: Osmanthus Tea remain green throughout the year. They are a mass of branches and leaves and blossom in autumn.
